Dominating the riverside, the castle is at the heart of Inverness. Until early 2020, it was mainly used as the sheriff's court, but now that the new justice centre has been built, the castle will be transformed over the coming years into a major visitor attraction which is due to open in 2025.
Information boards around the castle explain the history of the site. For more on the development of Inverness Castle as a visitor attraction, check out the new project website: Inverness Castle - Spirit of the Highlands which also contains information about the history of the castle.
Check out the Artist's impressions of the new buildings (released August 2020).
The Viewpoint from the castle tower is where you could climb the 95 steps to the top of the tower and take in the panoramic views of the river and city. However the viewpoint is closed for the foreseeable future due to the ongoing renovations but you can still walk around the castle and enjoy the views.
